Then purchasing bedlinen you will find many different terms which might not mean anything to you – thread count, weave and fibre are the most import factors to consider when choosing bed linen.
Thread count can range from 175-1000 counts. The count is measured by the number of threads running in both directions, the length (warp) and the width (weft), that are contained in one square inch of fabric. The greater the thread count, the more luxurious the fabric will feel.
However, a higher thread count will usually mean that the individual threads are thinner to achieve a luxurious feel and so may not last as long. For the best bed linen sheets, we suggest you choose a thread count of 200 or above but not lower than 175.
Bed linen sheets can be woven in percale, flannel and sateen weave.
Percale weave is popular for bed linen and has a thread count of 180 or above. It has medium weight, is firm and smooth with no gloss.
Flannel or flannelette is made from plain or twill weave, which can have a single or double raised thread/nap which creates heat retention points making flannel a warm soft fabric. It may be brushed to create extra softness or remain un-brushed. This makes it popular for winter time bed linen sheets.
Sateen sheets are made using the satin stitch, where the threads are mostly on one side of the fabric, giving it a smooth side, just like silk. This gives it a luxurious feel and cotton sateen is much more affordable than silk sateen.
If you prefer crisp, ironed sheets percale is probably for you. Those who like soft, smooth sheets on their beds probably love sateen sheets. And choose flannelette for its warm and softness.
Bed sheets can be woven in cotton, cotton mixed with polyester or silk.
Cotton is the most popular fibre. It is durable and will absorb moisture. It can be washed at high temperatures.
Polyester-cotton sheets will not crease but will tend not to breathe or absorb moisture as well as natural cotton.
Silk sheets are the most expensive option. Silk is soft to the touch and works well all year round, being cool in the summer as it absorbs your body heat and warm in winter as the fabric will drape your body eliminating air pockets and holding in your body heat.
Buy the best quality sheets that you can afford, taking into account the fabric, fibre and weave which most suits your needs and taste.
